A Teacher and Rancher Finds a Meaningful Way to Make an Ongoing Impact

Destiny, Cheryl’s beloved llama

Destiny, one of Cheryl Arndt’s beloved llamas, is a namesake for Destiny’s Fund, which provides support to CSU’s Large Animal Hospital.

Cheryl Arndt, a Colorado native, struggled with math throughout her formative years due to a learning disability. She received her B.S. from Western State College without taking algebra. However, algebra was a prerequisite for Colorado State University’s M.S. in natural resources. It was Arndt’s perseverance, and a summer of self-paced classes, that led to her love of math, especially statistics.

Once enrolled, Arndt thrived. Her integrated degree, which was only offered for one year, included classes in range science, recreation science, watershed management, and forestry. “Those four disciplines prepared me very well for two different professions,” Arndt explains. In addition to operating Ridgetop Llama Ranch near Allenspark, Colorado, Arndt taught middle and high school science and math (yes, math!) for more than 30 years.

These twin passions motivated Arndt to establish two gifts to CSU in her estate plan. The Great Spirit Scholarship will support financially needy students in the Warner College of Natural Resources, with an emphasis on enrolled citizens in a federally recognized American Indian Tribe. Destiny’s Fund, named for one of Arndt’s beloved llamas, provides support to CSU’s Large Animal Hospital.

Both future gifts create opportunities and address urgent needs. As someone who overcame her own educational challenges, Arndt is grateful that she can offer a boost to the next generation.

“I hope these gifts will open doors,” Arndt says. “I’ve been in classrooms my whole life, and this is a way to continue to make an impact.”
